IIT-BHU Launches Portable Drowning-Detection Tech for Swimmers and Fishermen

Researchers at IIT-BHU have developed a pioneering portable drowning-monitoring system designed for swimmers and fishermen. Combining real-time biometric sensors, GPS, and data analytics, the device tracks vitals such as heart rate, depth, and location. Upon detecting distress—such as erratic heartbeat or rapid submergence—it sends immediate alerts to nearby responders or designated mobile contacts. The unit also logs daily and weekly health metrics, enabling long-term usage monitoring. This battery-powered and wearable solution is intended for vulnerable groups like children and the elderly and seeks to reduce fatalities during cyclone seasons or rough sea conditions. Patented and now in commercial trial phase, the innovation aligns with India’s Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat goals. IIT-BHU is seeking industrial partners for mass deployment, which could revolutionize safety in aquatic environments and empower coastal communities.
